Workshop / Course Contents

The 2 days workshop is to train laboratory technicians/laboratory assistants in the best practices in safe handling of chemicals to avoid injury, ill-health or both to them. The workshop will explain how chemicals in the workplace can be absorbed by chemical handler, the dose-response relationship, duration and frequency of chemical exposure that determine the severity of injury or ill-health.

Workshop objectives

The objective of the workshop is to increase safety awareness and to learn:

  • the common safety rules and practices in the laboratory
  • the different types of hazardous chemicals and their properties

i. chemical carcinogen
ii. reproductive toxin
iii. particularly hazardous substances
iv. flammable chemicals
v. peroxide-forming chemicals
vi. water-reactive chemicals
vii. oxidizer
viii. reducer
ix. unstable chemicals
x. compressed gases

  • Effective hazard communication to chemical handlers is very important to ensure that they understand fully the hazards. The sources of safety information on chemicals such as labels, posters, msds are explained in detail. The importance of understanding msds is stressed.
  • The safe procedures on handling and working with the above substances are explained.

MR. LIM AH SEE

Mr. Lim was a team leader in the implementation of OHSAS 18001 in the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia, and was responsible for the preparation of its System Manual and Standard Operating Procedure Manual for OHSAS 18001. Until he retired in year 2000, Mr. Lim was responsible for the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Master Plan and programmes of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia.
Mr Lim has conducted lectures and talks on chemical and laboratory safety at various seminars and workshops organized by IKM.
