INTRODUCTION

Essential oils, flavour and fragrance materials are products derived from plant and animal sources. With their very special physical and chemical properties, these natural products have been used in many areas including food and beverages, pharmaceutical and medical preparations, cosmetics, and toiletries for a long period. With rapid economic development in many parts of the world in the last few decades, these substances are now being increasingly used in perfumery, nutriceuticals and aroma therapy for enhancing wellness and elevating the quality of life in the world population.
The farm-gate value of these natural products is estimated at more than USD 3 billion in 2007 and is growing at the rate of 15% per annum. Asia is playing a leading role in the production of these substances while the developed world is the main consumer. However, with increasing affluence in many Asian countries in the last two decade, it is estimated that Asia will be the main consumers of these wellness products and preparations in the near future.
While the production and trade in these wellness products are increasing rapidly in the last few decades, there is little improvement in the agricultural practices, extraction and processing technologies and end uses. The same can be said of finding new materials for these substances. It is therefore the main aim of this Conference to look into new trends in research and development, innovations in production and process technologies, finding new materials and uses, and, exploring and opening new markets for this important group of natural products.
The 5th Malaysian International Conference on Essential Oils, Flavour and Fragrance Materials (MICEOFF V) 2008 is the fifth in the series first initiated by the late Karim Yaacob. This series of conference is aimed at elevating the science, technology and innovations of this group of natural products with the ultimate target of finding wider applications, new markets and greater economic returns of the producers.

OBJECTIVES

MICEOFF V has the following objectives:

  • To improve the agricultural practices and finding new materials in the production of essential oils, flavour and fragrance materials.
  • To research and develop enhanced and new extraction and processing technologies for essential oils, flavour and fragrance materials.
  • To find new uses and applications, and value-added for essential oils, flavour and fragrance materials.
  • To use this group of natural products for enhancing wellness and improving the quality of life of the world population.
