Workshop / Course Contents
The objective of this workshop is to support the philosophy that:
“Chemicals in any form can be safely stored if the physical, chemical and hazardous properties are fully understood and the necessary precautions including the use of proper safeguards and personal protective equipment, are observed “
This workshop will be very illustrative and will give many practices on how to prevent accidents from happening in the chemical store. Laws & Regulations on chemical storage will also be discussed.
This workshop will stress the importance of having adequate and separate storage rooms for different classes of chemicals, laboratory glasswares, lab equipment and accessories and the different storage requirements of many types of chemicals found in the workplace.
Proper ventilation, temperature and humidity controls and fire services (sprinkler system, extinguishing system, Detection system and occupant warning system) will be explained.
This workshop will explain with many examples of the danger of old and expired chemicals in the store. Methodology on how to handle them safely and a 7-Step guidance to clean up such chemicals in the chemical store of will be discussed
Pro and Con on various systems of arranging & storing chemicals (random, alphabetical and hazard class) in the storeroom will be discussed. Many examples of mutually incompatible chemicals will be given.
The highlight of this workshop will be a practical example of a proper storage system for about 200 different chemicals.
Appropriate PPE , emergency response equipment & safety equipment for good management of the chemical store will be discussed. The type of training for store personnel will also be discussed.
The workshop ends with a discussion on the checklist for chemical storage and also examples of improper storage practices.
Trainer's Biodata
MR. LIM AH SEE
Mr. Lim was a team leader in the implementation of OHSAS 18001 in the laboratories of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia, and was responsible for the preparation of its System Manual and Standard Operating Procedure Manual for OHSAS 18001. Until he retired in year 2000, Mr. Lim was responsible for the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Master Plan and programmes of the Department of Chemistry Malaysia.
Mr Lim has conducted lectures and talks on chemical and laboratory safety at various seminars and workshops organized by IKM.
