TESTING ON FOOD

Every food-testing laboratory should be committed to provide accurate and timely chemical and microbial analysis to ensure consistent and wholesome food products. With today’s competitive marketplace and increasing emphasis on food safety, food quality issues have come to the forefront. Therefore, in order to produce quality food products, testing as an evidence needs to be carried out at recognized or accredited laboratories. These laboratories shall give reliable results.

Since 1990, Department of Standards Malaysia (STANDARDS MALAYSIA) has accredited 396 testing laboratories and calibration laboratories. Out of 396 accredited laboratories, 77 labs, which are 19.4% of the accredited laboratories, are accredited for food testing, for both chemical and microbiology fields.

Chemical and Biological testing that STANDARDS MALAYSIA offers include:

a) Chemical
Chemical tests and analysis on products and materials.

b) Toxicity
Chemical products, manufactured products, cosmetic and skin care products, medical devices and wastes and environmental samples.

c) Biological
Biological, microbiological and biomedical, testing and measurement, including examinations of foods, drugs and pharmaceuticals.

d) Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)
Analysis for detection and quantification of GMO covers both DNA and protein based methods.

e) Nucleic Acid
Requirements for accreditation of laboratories involved in nucleic acid testing in a broad variety of samples that provide services in particular fields related to molecular biology and/or genetic analysis.

Testing needs to be carried out at accredited laboratories because:

  • To ascertain that a laboratory has a commitment to the reliability of the results it releases;
  • To confirm that they are able to perform specific test/measurement using appropriate method;
  • To recognize the technical competence of an organization and its staff;
  • To assess the effectiveness of the quality management system of a laboratory and its staff.
