“UNEARTHING GREEN REMEDIES: FROM BACKYARD TO BEDSIDE”
Cancer Research Initiatives Foundation (CARIF), British High Commission – Science and Innovation Division, Malaysian Institute of Pharmaceutical & Nutraceuticals (iPharm), Center for Natural Products Research and Drug Discovery (CENAR) as well as Royal Society of Chemistry are pleased to announce the UK-Malaysia Symposium on Cancer Drug Discovery & Development which will take place at Subang Jaya on 24-25th February 2010.
Malaysia is one of the 17 mega-diversity centers. Embedded within the variety of flora and fauna are chemical diversity that may be developed into clinically useful drugs. However, at least in the past decade, cancer drug development has moved away from general cytotoxic compounds that disrupt the cell’s ability to divide and replicate, towards compounds that are able to specifically target key regulatory drivers of cancer initiation and development. Notably, recent whole genome sequencing approaches on cancer suggested that while there are at least 70 mutations per cancer cell, the initiation and progression of cancer are driven by aberrations in only a small number of signaling and regulatory cellular pathways. Hence, targeting these pathways may be the key to finding effective therapeutics for controlling cancer.
Therefore it is the intention of this Symposium to bring about the discussions between UK and Malaysia researchers on the development and use of various target-specific anti-cancer assays to study Malaysia’s natural products. Introducing the local research communities to research groups in the UK who specialize in various target-specific cancer activities may lead to collaborations that result in discovery of more effective anti-cancer therapeutics based on natural products.
Date: 24-25th FEBRUARY 2010 (Wednesday – Thursday)
Time: Day 1: 8.30 am – 5.30 pm
Day 2: 9.00 am – 12.30 pm
Venue: Grand Dorsett Hotel Subang
Admission to the symposium is free of charge but due to the limited number of places available, all participants are requested to register early and before 5th February 2010 via fax or email or mail. Participants are also strongly encouraged to submit an abstract to showcase local research. A small number of poster prizes and outstation travel bursaries are available based the merit of the submitted abstract.
CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
A 250 words abstract must be submitted by e-mail before 5th January 2010.
Notification of acceptance will be e-mailed to authors by 19th January 2010.
