INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON
NATURAL RESOURCES AND
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY AND HEALTH 2009
[NREM & ESH 2009]

THEME: Understanding the Causes and Impacts of Climate Change

24 - 26 November 2009
Hilton Hotel
Kuching, Sarawak, Malaysia

Introduction

The International Conference on Natural Resources and Environmental Management and Environmental Safety and Health (NREM & ESH) was first organised in 2001 and now has become a biennial conference. NREM & ESH 2009 is the fourth in this series. The theme for NREM& ESH has always been focused on the current pertinent environmental issue. For the past two years, climate change and global warming have been the topics frequently talk about by both the general public as well as among the scientific fraternity. The “Inconvenient Truth” presented by the award winner, Mr Al Gore, has captured the attention of the world. However many are still struggling to understand the processes involved in climate change.
In the scientific community, contradicting views and opinions on global warming have been put forward. There were many sceptics among the scientists on the phenomena of global warming in the past five years. With new evidences and continuous research on this subject, the sceptical voices are diminishing fast.
Sarawak having 13% of its land as peatland is serious about conserving its environment and is actively engaged in efforts to mitigate global warming. The gathering of prominent scientists in Kuching to discuss and exchange information and experiences on climate change would be most timely. Sarawak would benefit from these exchanges in its quest for a sustainable environment. Environmental scientists will find Kuching a wonderful venue for this conference. Your findings and ideas will be well received and discussed.

The Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Sarawak, is committed to bring awareness to all concerned regarding the aspects of safety in the workplace. The safety aspect in any workplace can never be over emphasized. However, most employers and employees are not well versed with the legislative and the necessary occupational safety procedures and technical know-how. The focus for ESH 2009 will be on the occupational safety and health in various industries including oil palm, forestry and construction sectors. The organizer is in the process of preparing the program and tentatively the ESH component of the conference will be run as concurrent session. Keynote speakers will be invited to talk on forest fires, occupational safety at timber harvesting industries, legislative and policies on product certification in compliance to the EU regulations. Participants will be able to interact in a workshop-based approach.
This is the best opportunity for employers (CEOs), managerial and supervisory staff to be acquainted with OSHA regulations and procedures for safer and more productive endeavours.
