Welcome to the IKM Website. Institut Kimia Malaysia, or IKM as we fondly call ourselves, is a professional scientific organization incorporated under the Chemists Act 1975. The role of IKM under the Act is to regulate the practice of chemistry and promote the welfare of the chemistry profession in Malaysia. IKM also aims to promote the advancement and public awareness of chemistry in Malaysia.

In the current age of the worldwide web (www) and globalization, we believe that the chemistry community plays a crucial role in the socio-economic development of the world. The chemistry fraternity is involved in the development of new products, technologies and innovations that bring economic development and improve the quality of life. Chemistry also plays a key role in the protection of our environment, conservation and sustainable ultilisation of our natural resources.

The Malaysian chemistry profession also has a key role to play in our quest to become a developed nation in the year 2020. Malaysian chemists must ensure that we produce quality products, technologies and innovations that can compete with the best in the global market place. In the light of current rising crude oil prices and food crisis, we chemists have an added role to play to increase crop yield and productivity, and to source for alternative energy.

I am sure that the Malaysian chemistry profession will rise to the occasion. We would also like to propose to the Malaysian government to produce more chemistry graduates and put top priority on research and development. IKM will do its part in the professional development and continuing education of our chemistry profession so that they are among the best in the world.
